The air that we breathe every day is a mixture of several different gases, including oxygen, which makes up just 21% of our air. Every breath we take delivers this oxygen straight to our lungs where gaseous exchange takes place and oxygen is transferred to the red blood cells. Oxygen molecules are then transported around the entire body where they are used to release vital energy to fuel all of the body’s living processes including growth, repair and regeneration.
During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a high concentration of oxygen is delivered to the lungs under increased atmospheric pressure in a hyperbaric chamber. The extra oxygen saturates the red blood cells and is carried around the body by the blood plasma enabling the delivery of high levels of oxygen to all tissues in the body.
The increase in available oxygen throughout the body allows a greater rate of cell division to take place. This is fundamental to tissue growth, regeneration, healing and repair, especially during the body’s recovery process after injury, surgery or illness.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of two fundamental elements. Firstly, it involves increasing the atmospheric pressure of a client’s environment so that a higher concentration of oxygen can be delivered to the lungs and body. Secondly, the percentage of oxygen breathed into the lungs is increased to near 100%.
These two elements combine to create what is known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy where the amount of oxygen in the body’s tissues available to carry out vital life processes is increased.
The increase in available oxygen in hyper-oxygenated tissues throughout the body allows for greater production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which in turn increases the available energy released by cell respiration. This increase in the rate of cell respiration enables a greater rate of cell division which is fundamental to tissue growth and regeneration.
During the recovery process, it is the accurate reproduction of healthy cell structures and DNA that determines the success and speed of tissue regeneration and healing. High levels of oxygen availability in the body’s cells is essential to this process, and if hypoxia occurs (low levels of oxygen in the blood) the recovery process will be slowed significantly.
During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, an enriched medium of up to 100% oxygen is delivered whilst inside a hyperbaric chamber. The chamber will be pressurised to greater than the atmospheric pressure exerted at sea level which is 1 ATA (Atmosphere Absolute).
To optimise effectiveness, pressure in a hyperbaric chamber should be greater than or equal to 1.5 ATA. In clinical practice, pressures applied usually range from 2 to 3 ATA. All HybO2 chambers apply a minimum pressure of 2 ATA.
Treatment is delivered in either a multiplace or a monoplace hyperbaric chamber. In a monoplace chamber, a single client breathes compressed pure oxygen. In a multiplace chamber, several clients are able to share a chamber together at the same time while they each breathe pure oxygen through a face mask or hood. Depending on circumstances, a client can be treated with up to three sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy per day.*
*Standard treatment protocols range from 75 minutes to 120 minutes over 20 to 40 sessions.
Normobaric oxygen therapy involves breathing in air that contains more oxygen than normal through a mask or tube connected to a source of oxygen or oxygen enriched air. At HybO2, 95% oxygen is supplied from a designated oxygen concentrator. This type of oxygen therapy is delivered without the use of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber.
Normobaric oxygen therapy can be very beneficial for people who do not have enough oxygen in their blood. It is recognised by the NHS (UK) as being able to help with conditions such as:
Normobaric oxygen therapy can help with symptoms such as breathlessness, feeling tired all the time, memory problems and coughing.
There are two possible non-intrusive methods of receiving Normobaric oxygen therapy, one is via short tubes placed in your nostrils (known as a nasal cannula) and the other is via a mask over your nose and mouth.
At HybO2 we use oxygen supplied through an oxygen concentrator and the process is fully supervised by one of our highly trained technicians.
